While it’s possible to actually run an Australian import transport yourself using the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources Website, it can however be quite confusing and you still need to ensure you grab all the forms and informational processes that come from the site and sections mentioned, you also don’t have anybody to ask except to contact the Department directly yourself, which can be a problem if it’s a simple enough question.

As can be seen below, with Our basic The Do-It-Yourself Plan, you receive the Petmoves Australian Canine Import Guide Overview which is the basics of what needs to be done to prepare for the Import Process as well as Phase One of the Australian Pet Import Guide. Also included in the Australian Pet Import Guide Overview are some easy to follow instructional ideas to aid you to be able to plan and operate the Import or Export yourself following the Guide we provide.

Also part of the Guide Overview is some import and interesting information which explains that the import process of a pet that has not been vaccinated for Rabies will take approximately 9 months, while a pet that has been vaccinated you would be looking at approximately 7 months to complete the Import, provided of course all things go to plan, which is why we are here.

It should be noted as well, that the whole Import Guide is broken down into Three Phases each with approximate timeframes listed:

  • Phase One – from commencement of import process to up to 5 months before export date
  • Phase Two – from 5 months to 3 months before export date
  • Phase Three – last 3 months before export

Options for Pet Import and Export Transport to and From Australia

Petmoves Pet Imports Consultancy wanted to publish a small and quick information page regarding the Import / Export of Pets and Transport to or from Australia in an endeavour to give people a broad overview of the main ways that their pets can be bought to, or exported from Australia.

People wanting to send their pet to or from Australia, can chose one of three alternatives to do so:

  1. People can do everything themselves, according to the guidelines provided by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources on their website. Unfortunately, the process and instructions on this website are guidelines and a summary only and don’t explain the fine details which must be met to ensure that the pet is accepted into the country and only spends the minimum 10 days in quarantine (this summary can be seen by looking at this United Kingdom Import example). One tiny detail incorrect on a laboratory report can invalidate the whole report and the whole export process, costing owners thousands. Owners relying on the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources guidelines are often unaware of the finer details until it’s too late.

Also, while it would be expected that vets and labs overseas should know the necessary requirements for Australia and duly meet them, on many occasions, they actually don’t, meaning that they require extra guidance from an experienced agent.

Also, to construct a timeline which meets all the requirements satisfactorily is a complicated process, which is the main reason why there are countless pet transport companies around the world making a very tidy profit by doing just that.

  2. Hire a traditional pet transport company to do everything and manage the process. Yes, most of the time (definitely not all of the time), the process will go smoothly and the pet will be able to duly be collected from Australian quarantine as expected. However, because of their overheads, these companies apply a huge surcharge for their services. At least a third of the quote they provide is for “administration costs” – that is, their profit. In the export of a larger dog from the UK, service charges can amount to $3000. It also needs to be remembered that in many cases, these people have to pay salaries, superannuation and insurance so they need to charge far more in regard to import and export transportation of pets because all these subsidiary business payments need to be met to ensure they comply with the Industry standards placed upon them by the Government. This can amount to a need to apply huge additional percentages to costs to ensure they meet the costs of doing business.
  3. This is where Petmoves Import Consultancy comes in, it could be seen that there was a far more economical way of managing pet imports for owners, which is the main reason Petmoves was launched. Petmoves Import Consultancy’s main idea is that it can be engaged to either manage/co-ordinate the entire process, through advising and guiding the owner (and their veterinarians) or assisting the owner at various stages. Because the business has such low overheads, the service surcharge is less than half what a traditional pet transport company would charge – yet the final results are exactly the same, in that a much loved pet is safely exported to Australia. So, the business offers a far more economical alternative to the pet owner, with the same successful outcome. Petmoves also developed exclusively, the Petmoves Personalised Australian Pet Import Guide, which gives a person a personalised plan for importing or exporting their pets to Australia, with all the documents and information a person could need to ensure the smooth import or export of their pet by themselves without any assistance from Petmoves if an individual chose to do that.

It has been asserted on the Internet that in engaging Petmoves Import Consultancy that our clients will “in addition to paying for this service, still have to pay an exporter as well”, as can be seen this is incorrect, as Petmoves Import Consultancy takes the place of engaging an expensive pet transport company. It is certainly not a service provided or paid for on top of what an “Exporter” does. It is instead what an “Exporter” does and is far less expensive, because it enables the clients themselves to become the “Exporter”, but without the fear of making mistakes and with the assurance of completing all tasks correctly and according to the strict timeline imposed by Australian authorities.

It should also be noted in terms of the cost of the actual air travel itself, Petmoves gathers together various quotes for the flight and then presents these to the client, so that they can choose the most economical one, without adding a loading of 10% to the price, which is what most pet transport companies do.

So as can be seen, a person has several options for exporting or importing a pet to or from Australia, however by far the least expensive and most the one with the most assurance granted option, if you are prepared to do the work yourself, is Petmoves Import Consultancy. If you’re not worried about price and don’t really have the time to do the import/export requirements yourself then by all means, go with a Pet Import Transport company. If you feel you are able to work with Guidelines only and think you can work your way through the Import/export process yourself within any help, then the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources option probably the way to go, the options are open. With Pemoves Import Consultancy though, you can do part from the Departments’ website and then come to us to assist you to complete the process if you wish. Even as a client of Petmoves, you can also get quotes from Import/Export Transportation Companies to complete sections or parts of the process if you desire, there is no limit of what you can do, it just depends on how much money you want to save, how much sanity you want to keep and how much time you have.

We hope this small article will assist visitors to Petmoves Import Consultancy in understanding the options available to them in regard to Importing or Exporting a Pet into or out of Australia and assists you in making a decision on what is the best option for you and your circumstances.

Slight Business Name Change

As many of you will see, there has been a slight name change for the Business from Petmoves Travel Consultancy to Petmoves Import Consultancy. This move was discussed heavily between us after looking over competitor’s websites and placings and talking with some SEO people.

As Petmoves is fully and wholly Internet based, its internet campaigning and advertising that we need to be aware of, and placement in the search engines was a problem, especially considering the name side of the business. Hence the reason we have slightly tweaked the name of the business in the end.

While it does give an impression that we only do Imports, we don’t believe that people will see it that way, and export consultancy is also mentioned on the website once people arrive, however Pam pretty much specialised the business leaning in the Import of pets into Australia over the export of pets, so again we felt the name reflected the main theme and aim of the business overall.

We also left the Consultancy in the name because Pam explains very clearly in her original documents to us when we purchased the business that only on the rare occasion are you doing all the work, but even then your still only really consulting with the people at either end, you’re not the one running around doing the actual work. We agreed with that and wanted to keep the business running on the consulting line as we bought it to ensure that the price was still inexpensive for people to import their pets themselves with Pam’s specially designed and personalised Australia Pet Import Guide.

With this in mind, we hope you enjoy the slight name change, nothing else has changed, just the name, the quality of service is still the same however and if you have anybody that wants to Import a pet dog or cat into Australia, have them contact us for a quote, you might be surprised just how much cheaper we are in comparison to our competitors.

With this in mind we decided a new website format was required, hence what you now see.

Along with the New Website, wanted to ensure that international visitors to the site could locate us as well, as part of our business improvement ideas, besides those in Australia already, was to advertise overseas aiming our services at people overseas that may be planning to move to Australia permanently or on an extended stay and wish to bring their pets with them. In this regard we had a new Domain Name created: http://www.petmoves.net.

Petmoves Import Consultancy is Under New Ownership

It is with pleasure that I announce that Petmoves Import Consultancy is now under New Ownership after Pam made the decision to sell her cottage business and move on to another project she has an idea for. The Business is now being owned and operated by Sean, Rodney and Veronica Bennetts.

Combined, Sean, Rodney and Veronica bring approximately 44 years’ experience in the Breeding and Showing Dog world, both as members of Dogs NSW, Dogs SA and now Dogs VIC. Rodney and Veronica have their Kennels, Bovais Kennels for many years, having bred and shown Lhasa Apsos, Tibetan Terriers, Poodles (All Sizes), French Bulldogs and German Spitz. Sean had his own Kennels breeding and showing Akita Inus for approximately 8 years and now has an Irish Wolfhound from Ornumflow Kennels in NSW.

Over the years that we have owned, bred and shown dogs, we have imported approximately 5 from overseas, from England, Norway and New Zealand, so are familiar with the intricacies and hassles importing dogs into Australia can bring. With the increased biosecurity issues and potential for diseases being brought into the country, the process of preparing the dogs overseas and then getting them here properly has increased in difficulty.

With Pam’s help and advice we will continue the business the way she set it up originally and we hope to slowly expand the potential of the business to not just importing cats and dogs into Australia, but also semen and also preparing packages that assist in the export and potential return of dogs and cats back into Australia. These ideas will be slowly implemented as we move ahead to advertise the Business and grow its income, allowing for the extended potential growth direction we would like to move.

If you have used Petmoves before while Pam was the owner, we hope you will continue to use us for your import needs. You can be assured that we will provide the same exceptionally high quality of service you received with Pam. We would again like to thank Pam for the opportunity to purchase the business and look forward to getting into it and moving ahead with it quickly.

As will be seen, we have already moved ahead with a fully redesigned website for the business, a slight change and update in the original Logo, as well as creating a twitter feed for the business. This information can be seen in the next Latest News Article.
